LIGHTS

Lights is an intimate, humorous, and heartfelt story of a tight-knit family adapting to profound life changes. Evan, a man who experiences life from his wheelchair, is living with his new wife Sarah in Vancouver. Alone in Newfoundland is his mother, Nancy — a retired teacher and widow who is now dealing with escalating Alzheimer’s disease.

When Evan and Sarah make the long trek to St. Johns during the Christmas holidays, the immediate ease and comfort of their bond begins to crack under the realities of Nancy’s condition — challenging everyone to see just how much they’re willing to grow, and change, for love.

ABOUT FLYING START

Lights was selected for Touchstone’s 2019-20 Flying Start program. Since 2008, Flying Start has helped launch the next generation of Canadian playwrights. By committing to a full-scale premiere of an emerging work, with an attached development process, Flying Start fully nurtures the work while sharpening it for in-house production. Past Flying Start productions include works from Amy Lee Lavoie, Jordan Hall, Briana Brown, Peter Boychuk and Sally Stubbs; all of whom have an active writing and theatre career and made many of their working relationships during Flying Start.
