The Lawyer Show 2016

One of Vancouver’s most important legal events and a valued tradition, The Lawyer Show is a fundraiser for two of Vancouver’s most cherished theatre institutions: Carousel Theatre for Young People and Touchstone Theatre, both registered charities. Every year, thirty or so lawyers take to the boards to prove that acting and the practice of law have way too much in common. Lines are learned, songs are sung, audiences applaud, money is raised, and fun and friendship abound along the way.

The 2016 Lawyer Show is . . .

It’s 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland, and quirky, plus-sized, teenager Tracy Turnblad has one dream: to dance on the “Corny Collins Show”. When she gets put in detention with the African-American students in the school, they teach her some of their dance moves, and her new found groove wins her a spot on Corny’s show. Overnight, Tracy transforms from a nobody into a star, and uses her newfound influence to advocate for racial integration on the television show. Tracy faces scrutiny and bullying from the network producer, Velma, and her popular, but vicious, daughter, Amber. With the help of the teenage heartthrob Link, host Corny Collins, and Motormouth Maybelle (the host of ‘Negro Day’), Tracy overcomes the odds and succeeds in her mission to integrate the “Corny Collins Show.” Tony Award-winning Hairspray continues to be one of the most widely produced musicals today, not only because of its wit and charm, but also because of the beautiful message of acceptance and progress that it portrays.

AUDITIONS FOR THE 2016 LAWYER SHOW will take place from 7pm to 10pm on October 14th and 18th 2015, at the Carousel Theatre Rehearsal Space, 1411 Cartwright St. on Granville Island.

Never Auditioned before? Think it sounds scary? It's not. It's easy! There is only one criteria - you must be a lawyer to audition (our definition of 'lawyer' includes law students, articling students and clerks).

We are especially looking for lawyer/performers of diversity for the 2016 Lawyer Show! Click here for a breakdown of the characters in the show.

Choose one of the monologues below and work with it until you can read it with confidence. You don't need to memorize it, just try to show us that you understand the situation it describes and can embody a character with conviction. Then prepare a short unaccompanied song - anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. If you're a singer, choose something that shows you at your best. If you're not a singer, Happy Birthday or Oh Canada are perfectly acceptable.

Show up during one of the audition times listed above. No appointment is necessary. Depending on how many people are waiting, we'll get you in as quickly as we can, and your audition, in which you will read your monologue and sing your song, should take no more than 10 minutes. We will announce the results of the auditions a few weeks later. We usually choose 25 to 30 lawyers for the show. Hope to see you there!
