Cheat Sheets: Theory for Dummies

A crash-course in music theory from one of Vancouver’s leading Musical Directors. For stage managers and designers wanting to learn to read music, performers seeking a refresher on how to look at a score, or directors who have no idea what any of this is — this session is for you. All levels welcome. There are no stupid questions.


Gypsy In Depth

A full-day, immersive examination of Gypsy (Book by Arthur Laurents, Music by Jule Styne, Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) and what makes it such a musical masterpiece. In a stop-start reading accompanied by the soundtrack, Viertel combs through the material to discuss and assess its contents with the class. This is a not-to-be-missed deep-dive into structure and style from one of America’s most revered musical theatre professionals. For writers, composers or performers – all are welcome!


Carousel Scene Study

Referred to by Sondheim as “probably the single most important moment in the evolution of contemporary musicals”, the “Bench Scene” will be performed for the class and analyzed by Viertel — deconstructing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s perfect intersection of story, music, song, and dance.


Instructor Bios:

Christopher King
Christopher King is an actor, director, music director, writer and educator. He has music directed or directed over 30 musicals/plays in the lower mainland. He recently music directed and played the role of “Shrank” in Theatre Under the Stars’ production of West Side Story, and played the role of “Man 1” in Gateway Theatre’s production of Closer Than Ever. This past December he music directed The Music Man also at Gateway Theatre, and 42nd Street at Studio 58 in February. Chris directed a successful production of the play, Parfumerie at the Metro Theatre, and will be directing the one man play, Buyer and Cellar for Fighting Chance Productions in the fall. He was recently commissioned by the Gateway Theatre Academy to write an original musical Solo Sisters, which was performed last April, and is working on original music for Little Miss Glitz coming up next spring. Chris has taught at Capilano University, Studio 58 and the University of British Columbia’s theatre departments. He has won 4 Ovation Awards including Outstanding Music Direction for Gateway theatre’s The Music Man and Theatre Under the Stars’ production of Hairspray. Chris is a proud member of Canadian Actors’ Equity as well as The Vancouver Musicians’ Association.

Jack Viertel
Jack Viertel is the Senior Vice President of Jujamcyn Theaters, which owns and operates five Broadway theaters. He has been involved in dozens of productions presented by Jujamcyn since 1987, including multiple Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winners, from City of Angels to Angels in America. He has also helped shepherd six of August Wilson’s plays to Broadway. He is the Artistic Director of New York City Center’s acclaimed Encores! Series, which presents three musical productions every season. In that capacity he has overseen fifty shows, for some of which he adapted the scripts. He conceived the long-running Smokey Joe’s Café and the critically acclaimed After Midnight and has been a creative consultant on many shows, including Hairspray, A Christmas Story, and Dear Evan Hansen. He was the Mark Taper Forum’s dramaturg and the drama critic and arts editor of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and he has spent a decade teaching musical theater at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.
